Let me tell you a story

The First Time I Heard God's Voice

A life-impacting event happened to me in grade school. As I was getting ready to go to school one morning, I reached up into our front hall closet to grab my hat. As soon as I grabbed it, I heard a voice inside me: “There’s going to be a new boy at school today, and I want you to take care of him for me.”  

When I heard that voice, it didn’t feel abnormal or weird. I simply responded, “Okay.” That was my response. It was pretty simple, even childlike. 

The school had not announced ahead of time that there would be a new boy in school that day. But halfway through the morning, the principal walked in the door with this young boy under her arm. She said, “Hello class, I want you all to meet Tony. Tony is going to be joining your class today.”

Well, the first opportunity that I had, I went up and shook Tony’s hand and said, “Hey Tony, I’m Joe,” then I introduced him to all of my friends. When we got out on the playground, I made sure Tony was in all of the games. Pretty soon, everybody wanted Tony on their team. It was almost like he became the hero of the day. 

It was a great first day for Tony. No bullies came to scare him or hurt him. He was loved and accepted. Why? Because I had heard the voice of God. I’d received an assignment from God, directions that changed something in an earthly situation.

God did not give up talking to His people personally. He still speaks. I am a testimony to that! He is alive. He is active. He wants to be alive and active in your life. Just like He is in mine. Nothing makes the written word come alive more than being able to have the author of it speak into your heart and lead you into the truth.

John 16:12-13

"I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come."
